Crazy night...
“NORMAN, Okla. – One person was killed in an explosion near a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday night in what authorities said appeared to be a suicide.
The blast, in a traffic circle about 100 yards from Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, could be heard by some in the crowd of 84,000, but university President David Boren said no one inside the stadium was ever in danger.
“We are apparently dealing with an individual suicide, which is under full investigation,” Boren said in a statement. There was no information about the person who was killed, and no reports of any other injuries.
A police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast. The area near the stadium was searched by bomb-sniffing dogs.
Jaclyn Hull, an OU freshman who left the game shortly before the explosion, said she saw “a little bit of smoke, about as much as you would see coming up from a grill.”
Officers cordoned off an area west of the stadium after the explosion and nobody was allowed out of the stadium for about a half-hour after the blast, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m., about halftime of the Sooners’ game against Kansas State. The game continued.”
This is the story I pulled off of msn.com. Apparently, this happened tonight while I was at the game. I had no idea at the time that something had happened. I was leaving the game and I had a voicemail from Aaron, which was a little weird. She said she was checking on me to see that everything was okay b/c of all the stuff going on at the stadium. That was weird, I was like---what's going on at the stadium? It kinda freaked me out, so I left her a message letting her know all was well. I had no idea that there had been an explosion on campus, not to mention it was a suicide. I was on campus. I heard something before half-time...around the time OU scored. They set off fireworks at the stadium whenever OU scores (during night games). So, OU scores and there was a kind of loud boom. I thought it was maybe thunder or something but it was weird. This guy asked us if we heard that and he thought it was thunder too. Apparently it was the explosion. It's really weird. They shut down the stadium too. Noone could go in or out for about half an hour. What really freaks me out is that my nephew was at the game. I know he's safe and was never in any real danger (I s'pose) but had anything happened to him there's no way I could have handled that. I'm really glad he didn't know about it at the time and I'm glad I didn't either, because we both would have freaked out. I'm actually a little freaked out about it now. I don't think I would be as much had he not been at the game. Thank God he's okay.
That's all I'm going to post tonight. I had a long post last night, but the internet ate it. I guess it just wasn't meant to be read. 'Tis okay...so...'til next time...
